Episode 12 – Synopsis
This week,
we acknowledge courage and the will to overcome obstacles
and challenges
in your life. Imagine Afrika pays tribute to all those
young people who live everyday with courage and a passion
for life despite physical or mental disabilities or
the loss of their caregivers and parents. Then there
are the many young people who live positively with
HIV, who manage the disease by taking their medication
on time, and have a positive, healthy lifestyle that
keeps them focussed on their dreams. Way to go guys!
Koffie in Ivory Coast
has found a way to live with a physical disability
and enjoy life with self-respect and dignity. We admire
Koffie’s ability to fit right in there with everyone
else, proving that he has got game on and off the basketball
court, showing off his skills with his event planning.
It just goes to show that only you can limit yourself
through what you believe you can and cannot do. So
why not go for it and follow your dreams no matter
what people say?
Stigma is a form of discrimination
that can harm and even cripple people’s lives. It shows
a lack of insight in those who discriminate and impacts
on the lives and happiness of people living with HIV.
In this week’s episode all our characters are putting
together cool campaigns to reach their peers to stamp
out stigma – something which is really all about ignorance.
To fight that ignorance
and create greater awareness, the team in Ivory Coast
have included a drive to get people to come and test
and know their status as this is the first step towards
taking responsibility for ones future and life. Models,
stylists, talented musicians and government ministers
meet as the campaign reaches a high note with a great
event and lots of fun for everyone.
But how will the campaign
be received by the community? Who will break the loyalty
of the team and who will be worked right out of the
team at the last minute? A few surprises coming up!
Just like their fellow Imagine Afrika characters in
Uganda, the crew in Ivory Coast have realised that
the media matters and can do a lot to build and promote
your message and event.
In Uganda, it is time
for the super all-girl team to stand up and blow their
own trumpets! They went out there and did it. These
gals have stuck to their guns and gone on their mission
without holding back because they felt their peers
needed to know. This week we see the grand finale unfold
and get to share in the realisation of their dream.
This week we also get
to meet a confident young Ugandan woman who challenges
stigma on every level. See Jackie reveal her experience
with a hard challenge, and how she overcame the lowest
point in her life.
It is really moving to
see how in Botswana, Kitso has reached out to Peo and
wants to comfort her when she drops her tough guard
and cries. Without an identity document, life is hard
and you become invisible. Kitso knows this and he will
not give up pushing and motivating Peo.
Ordinary heroes are everywhere
amongst us – they’re right there in your life, beside
you in your community and even in your home. They are
moving forward no matter what. And that includes YOU!
