Episode 4 – Synopsis: Are you the man? Where do you stand?

This week on Imagine Afrika III we’re up close and personal with our guys as we ask the topical question: “Just what makes you a good man?” And more intriguing; “What is a real man?”

We discover during this episode that some men do want to make a difference in society, even if it means confronting the truth about themselves and their actions, or challenging other guys to step up their game.

Join us on this journey as we go on a gutsy exploration of what guys are getting up to across Africa, in each country, and how their behaviour, attitudes, choices and influences are informing their experiences of being a man and affecting their lives. Honesty, fidelity and being supportive to their woman is a choice and this week we watch how decisions have consequences – when a guy least expects them!

Would it surprise you to know that men actually do cry, think about love and romance and want to be good partners and providers to their women and their families? And real men are the ones who want to protect their partners from HIV by avoiding risky sexual and other behaviours, using a condom, testing for and knowing their HIV status – and being worthy of trust as Allan, our specialist ‘doc’ discovers.

He goes out into the field, back to home base in Uganda to investigate what guys are up to, and the kinds of organisations and services that create a space for them to be the kind of supportive partners they aim to be. His trip also has a deeply personal impact.

Allan (from Imagine Afrika Season 1) vows to keep it real and things heat up after dark when he takes things further and hosts a guy-talk session where we hear it as it is from Ugandan guys. Watch out!!!! There are more than a few surprising ideas that come up.

We meet up with Ntoro in Botswana for a deeply personal insight into manhood and his own experience as a guy with love, relationship challenges and his true feelings – what will inform the outcome of events, and how will he reconcile his views on love and commitment with the reality of his situation? Kitso has a plan and the two set out to execute their aim.

In Cote d’Ivoire, Coffie spices things up with a headstrong and very individual take on finding expression as a man. Through several dramatic and unexpected twists we discover what happens when a guy drops the mask of social expectation and is made to confront his heart, feelings and the consequences of his actions? Need we say more!

Watch Imagine Afrika 3 this week and re-examine what your views and attitudes about, and towards being a real man are. See how it’s possible to have a man support his partner during pregnancy, raising his children, influencing his peers and choosing to be faithful.
