Episode 7 – Synopsis: Living Life

This week in Imagine Africa III we follow the stories of Rachel, Ntoro and Coffie as they all confront life’s challenges head on.

In Uganda we get to meet a fiery young Ugandan activist who puts her beliefs into action in her community and is not afraid to challenge men to fulfil their role as partners, or to ask them to test for HIV. Rachel Kyomugisha is 27 years old and is passionate about reaching out to her peers. She is 6 months pregnant and about to become a mother.

We get to see her in action in the field as a leader in her drama group, and then we touch base with her back home. Love is in the air as we see the tender and very romantic connection she has with her husband, Constantine. Their love story symbolises hope and how it can overcome fear. In Rachel’s own words, these two are living proof that being HIV positive is no detriment to finding love and happiness with someone who accepts you as you are and for who you are.

In Botswana the drama around Ntoro’s life has worsened and he may now be facing a hefty jail sentence depending on the outcome of the court proceedings. Prison is where he finds himself in the interim. Kitso manages to talk to the authorities and to visit him, but things are not looking good. It’s clear that Kitso is feeling very affected by what’s happening. He is also very concerned for Ntoro’s younger brother – is he following in Ntoro’s footsteps and what can be done to help him. The big
question is: will Ntoro overcome his situation the way Kitso did when he faced similar circumstances a few years ago?

In the Ivory Coast we get to learn more about Coffie. A soccer match has been organised and we go with him to see how he uses this platform to raise awareness about HIV. Coffie has even coined a slogan to get people to think about using condoms whenever they have sex. A good chuckle is to be had as we watch him give a demonstration on how to use them!
